What are Canadians' sentiments regarding immigration levels?

By 2023, Canada's population had grown to 40 million, experiencing a 2.7% increase primarily attributed to immigration. Traditionally, Canadians have expressed favorable opinions toward immigrants, with Canada earning the title of the most welcoming country for immigrants in 2019. However, a noticeable shift occurred in 2023 when the government's plan to admit 485,000 permanent residents in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025 and 2026 raised heightened concerns about elevated immigration levels.

Despite these apprehensions, there has been no alteration in the overall attitudes towards immigrants. This change was largely propelled by the perception that high immigration levels significantly contribute to the housing crisis. Policymakers should closely monitor public sentiments towards immigration, as negative perceptions may impact the support and reception immigrants receive. Notwithstanding the increasing concerns about immigration levels, the public maintains a positive outlook on the contributions of immigrants.
